Succulent Gardens are beautiful. I just love the multitude
of colors that you can find in succulents,: everything from Fuzzy Silver Grey
to Matte Orange to Deep Brown and Bright Red, just to list a few. Succulents
come in many interesting shapes as well. The spiralling repetition of leaves form exquisite
geometric patterns and look like little florettes.
Succulents are sometimes called "fat plants" because of their fleshy structure designed to retain water . This makes them especially drought resistant. That being said, these plants can take a lot of neglect, which doesn't mean you don't have to water them, but depending on the right conditions, they can survive with being watered just once a week. I tell people to let their gardens go through "dry periods." You see, succulents originated from dry climates where water is sparse. Something in their genetic structure tells them to suck up as much water as they can whenever they can. Overzealous watering will result in plants becoming extremely bloated and translucent, like an over-filled water balloon about to explode. The next thing you'll notice is the carcass of of a once beautiful succulent.
Sunlight. Yes, sunlight. I'm often befuddled by people who want to place plants in the dark recesses of their home. Plants need sunlight. Period. Sure, there a re plants which can survive indoors in lowlight conditions, but all of them need some sunlight. Succulents need sunlight. In fact, the wonderful colors of the succulents are enhanced when given more sunlight. in fact, succulents will thrive in direct sunlight. But it doesn't mean they are immune to sunburn. Always allow your succulents to adapt to their environment gradually. Start with spotted shade, and day by day move your succulents into the sunlight. In no time you can have your succulents in bright sunlight. Does this mean you can't have your succulents indoors? Of course not. I suggest to people that they keep their succulent gardens indoors for a week at a time. One week indoors, and then one week outdoors. Rotating your gardens will help keep their beautiful color and structure. It is important to note that if your plants start to telescope , that is, start to become tall with spaces between the leaves, they have become etiolated. These plants are desperately reaching for sunlight. Unfortunately, there isn't a way to save these plants if they've got to this point. Your only solution: cut the plants back and let the plants regrown in better light conditions.
So, if you're having difficulty choosing flowers, consider a succulent garden. Here are some great reasons:
- Succulent Gardens will last longer than flowers.
- They are extremely drought resistant (and can survive a little neglect).
- A non-traditional arrangement, that is both unique and unusual.
- If maintained properly, will last for years to come.
